BRIEF OVERVIEW

 HOW IS THE SEMPI SCM HELPING OUR COMMUNITIES TO HEAL?

The Aussie designed SEMPI SCM teaches and empowers any person (child or adult) from any social class, how to have a deeper level of conversation, if you ask someone, ‘ARE YOU O.K?’ AND THEY SAY NO. It teaches THE NEXT STEP to the 'RUOK?' question, if this question feels too hard to sit with, or doesn't feel right for the person saying 'NO.' 

The SEMPI SCM works through teaching empathy, practical listening skills,  and a broader needs vocabulary. This strengthens the skills of communication, so that all parties feel heard, validated, and understood. Learning these skills leads to a more equal social class power balance, while CROSSING RACE, CREED, AGE, COLOUR AND RELIGION.  The 'SEMPI SCM,' is designed to stop the loneliness, silence, stigma, and isolation, that exists within our communities.

The SEMPI SCM is helping to create a world where people do not simply survive, but engage in a way that works to achieve invigorating internal and interpersonal satisfaction. The SEMPI SCM is currently being used within community to allow all members, no matter their story, to learn to have an empowered voice, while gaining insight into their own story. 


Where is SEMPI SCM being used right now?

As of August 29, 2018, The SEMPI SCM is being sent to organisations through a FREE PDF to share, and teach to any community members, who would like to feel heard by others.. 

The SEMPI pamphlets, and how to use them, are shared with: patients in hospitals (children to elderly, in both general hospitals, and hospices) patients with serious mental illness, and their families in mental health units, schools, child abuse survivors, people with disabilities, people in domestic violence, homeless people, lgbtqi youth and adults, victims of assault, children experiencing separating parents, bullied school children, disaster victims, lonely people, people in correctional facilities, first responders, advocates, church groups, good Samaritans, medical staff, corporate professionals, as well as American serving soldiers in the Army, Navy, Air force, and the Marines, and their families.

WHAT IS SEMPI?
This model has an altruistic, reciprocal philosophy, allowing any person, from any social class, to use the model in turn, so that all parties feel heard, validated and understood, while also leading to a more equal social class power balance. Social class 'cross over' of participants using this model, is invited, as it is my belief that by mixing up the social status participants, class barriers will come down, as deeper perspectives and empathetic understanding of each other’s lives become more understood. ​This idea matters because people need personal equality and freedom to thrive. The silence and imbalance of power within our society needs to be stopped, so that we all feel heard, validated and understood, while honoring each other.

​The 'SSCM' also gives an immediate snapshot into the participant’s mental and physical health, right at that moment, so that a concise, and accurate plan can be devised if needed.
This model also has a ‘pay it forward philosophy, allowing it to be free, once it gets out into the community. This new model can be used everywhere from schools, to nursing homes, to the corporate sector, basically everywhere!

​ 'ARE YOU O.K?' AND THEY ANSWER, 'NO.' ​
​The ‘SEMPI Social Communication Model’ has been written for ALL community members, from all walks of life! Imagine if people could learn to speak freely and honestly with a strong voice, about why they feel the way they do and what their individual needs are, while also believing that they will be heard when they do this.
This model has the power to teach this, and change the world!
The ‘SEMPI Social Communication Model’ (pronounced Sem-pie) has been developed primarily with the purpose of reducing ''the tribal stigma of race, nation, and religion" (Goffman, 1963) within our communities. 
WHY IS THE ‘SEMPI MODEL’ SO SPECIAL?
While studying my Master's Degree, I noticed that people in the community were asking others, ‘Are you O.K?’, but many people weren’t too sure what to do if the person answered, NO. So, instead of following links to a website for answers, I wanted to try something new. Something more immediate, that included conversation skills that would empower our communities to help a fellow human being right at that moment, that were FREE, and that could be paid forward once someone answer's NO.
HOW DOES 'SEMPI TEACH AND EMPOWER OUR COMMUNITIES?
I wanted to teach people heart to heart conversation skills through an easy to use listening system, (NOT A COUNSELLING MODEL), so that they can confidently handle times when more deeper conversation skills are needed, enabling any community member, from age 8 up, to feel heard, validated and understood, right in that moment!
The ‘SSCM’ teaches a ‘Listener’ the skills to 'hold space' for a ‘Sharer’, (in under 20 mins).Mastering these new skills, allows the ‘Listener’ to teach the SSCM to the ‘Sharer’ so that they can take time to gain insight and awareness about themselves, while building personal resilience, improve self-esteem and coping strategies. Going through the 'SSCM' will provide the ‘Sharer’ with time to explore the 5 'SEMPI entry words,' while empowering them to find their own answers once they feel heard, validated and understood. It is hoped that by working through the model, things will calm down for the person, so that they only need to access referral and crisis services if they feel they need more professional support. This also reduces the burden on our overloaded crisis care lines, saving government dollars, to be spent on improving community services elsewhere.
INTRODUCING THE QUESTION, ‘HOW IS YOUR SEMPI?'
While I was writing the ‘SSCM’, I decided to include a new solution in response to the question ‘Are you O.K?’ if the person says NO. I created a whole new angle, and an alternative solution to knowing what to do in this situation. This questions fills the gap if someone says ‘NO’ after being asked ‘Are You O.K?’
'HOW IS YOUR SEMPI?' is a deeper, more real invitation, asked by one person to another, (between ages three to adult), that covers 5 essential basic human needs (through the acronym SEMPI)
These are 1. SLEEP/SAFETY NEED- the need to rest.
The need to feel safe.
2. EMOTIONAL NEED- the need for love, empathy, and to matter.
3. MEET YOUR BASIC SURVIVAL NEEDS- the need for food, water, clothing and housing.
4. PHYSICAL BODY NEED- the need to feel physically well in our bodies.
5. INCLUSION NEED- The need to be included in your community.

​‘HOW IS YOUR SEMPI?’ comes with an in built, genuine offer for the ‘Listener’ to take the time, and empathise with the ‘Sharer’, consequently moving the conversation to a deeper level of care and understanding for each other’s perspectives!
‘HOW IS YOUR SEMPI?’ is a totally unique question that no one is used to hearing, so they cannot equate it to the question ‘ARE YOU O.K?’

WHY WAS THIS QUESTION DESIGNED?
‘HOW IS YOUR SEMPI?’ teaches adult community members how to easily move into deeper, more empathetic conversations, enabling everyone to feel heard & understood.
Each letter within the acronym 'SEMPI' covers all aspects of daily mental and physical health in an easy to use system. Children from age three can use the specifically designed children’s model, to learn how to speak about and understand themselves. They can also gain personal insight about how their bodies and minds are feeling from an early age, thereby reducing stigma and normalising talk around mental health. Children can speak about anything they choose, be it good or not so good, in their daily ‘SEMPI’ routine. They can share this model with adults, or other children, allowing everyone to reciprocally have a voice and feel heard!

WHY IS MY CAMPAIGN IMPORTANT TO ME?
There is no other model like the ‘SSCM’ in the world!
It is very clear to me, that mental illness has become more prevalent and community resources are now at breaking point! Every day, as a practicing Psychotherapist, I see extreme levels of loneliness, low self-esteem and loss of hope. I see class division, segregation, judgmental behaviour, inequality, stigma, and discrimination. I have also designed the ‘SSCM’ as a preventative measure, so that we as a society do not become mentally or emotionally unwell. It is my life’s mission to change this.
MY BACKGROUND
I am a professional Psychotherapist/Counsellor with a Masters Degree in Psychotherapy and Counselling (MCAP). I have worked in front line Community Mental Health & Disabilities, for the past 32 years. I have walked with thousands of struggling community members and I have seen a lot! These amazing souls are the reason why I get out of bed every day. My passion is deep and I am a very driven and serious advocate for many of my clients. Giving my clients a voice to feel heard and empowered is why I have written this model. It is for them.
SUCCESSFUL TRACK RECORD
In my previous position, I was the Specialist Mental Health Disability Employment Services Area Manager for the Macarthur Region (West Sydney, Australia) for the Schizophrenia Fellowship of NSW (now known as ‘One Door.’) I created this arm of the business from scratch, to a five star rating. My position included finding, placing and supporting 200 plus clients with a mental health issue and or a disability to stay in employment with my team. I also employed and trained staff, liaised with affiliated community organisations, designed and maintained monthly budgets, advocated for our clients and worked closely with employers. I extended the initial DES contract to include a new ESS contract, bringing in even more clients, and making sure that the DES now had a bright future with long term viability. My proven background within the community, and my confidence in the ‘SSCM’ to be a ground-breaking new way for society to become empowered, is extremely exciting. The ‘SSCM’ is a culmination of my 32 years of professional experience and I am not stranger to hard work, nor do I have rose coloured glasses on when it comes to stigma reduction!
SAVING GOVERNMENT MONEY
The 'SSCM' is created to be an aid for the community (not a replacement for professional help). Nor is it a counselling model. It is a listening model. Every day, I see a HUGE gap in the area of mental health self-care in the community due to escalating living costs and cuts to social services. This model is created with this in mind, to assist the community to work with their difficulties together, and be able to identify them early, so that their problems don't escalate to higher unmanageable levels, and enabling community money to be spent developing other programs.
STIGMA REDUCTION
The ‘SSCM’ is designed to work across all levels of stigma, including workplace stigma, mental health stigma, social class stigma, disability stigma and social stigma (physical, behavioural, intellectual and group). It teaches each person an easy to remember sequential task that they can adapt to suit their own personal stories, and then pay it forward.
CAN PEOPLE WITH A DISABILITY USE THE  ‘SSCM’?
People living with all types of disabilities can use the ‘SSCM’ to feel heard! I have used the “SSCM’ within the community to gain feedback and advice as to how to improve the model, from client’s who have downs syndrome, autism, who are experiencing homelessness, have an intellectual disability, cerebral palsy, hearing impairment and within a palliative care unit. Most of my feedback has been very positive, however, working with the prototype booklets has been challenging, and expensive, but I believe that I have now created a version that works well and has all of the emergency service numbers included within the format for extra support in NSW, Australia.
The ‘SSCM’ also assists the carers, advocates, and nursing staff who work with the elderly, to have a voice and feel heard. The SSCM is also indicated to be one answer to the current lack of time being given in nursing homes to patients, leading the patients to be being over medicated to keep their behaviours settled, as per the current research “RedUSe: reducing antipsychotic and benzodiazepine prescribing in residential aged care facilities” Juanita L Westbury, Peter Gee, Tristan Ling, Donnamay T Brown, Katherine H Franks, Ivan Bindoff, Aidan Bindoff and Gregory M Peterson Med J Aust || doi:10.5694/mja17.00857 Published online: 14 May 2018
CAN PROFESSIONALS USE THE ‘SSCM?’
Absolutely! This model has the same format for everyone across the community, including professional workers. I include rescue personnel within this group as I was a fully accredited first responder Road Rescue Officer with the NSW State Emergency Service and I know full well what emergency responders need when it comes to feeling heard!

​WHAT RESEARCH HAS BEEN PERFORMED TO VALIDATE THE RESULTS OF THE 'SSCM?' 
I initially tested the ‘SSCM’ with women in Sydney who were experiencing primary homelessness, while living with mental and physical health issues in 2016. I chose this group as they knew me and trusted me from when I was researching my Master’s degree thesis on stigma at the Reverend Bill Crews 'Exodus Foundation' in Ashfield NSW, known as ‘A qualitative analysis to investigate the varied responses from the female primary homeless as evident in demonstrations from the general public’ in September 2016. The response to the ‘SSCM’ was amazing from the women, and once they had learnt the model they then ‘paid it forward’ and taught the other women from my prototype booklets. I made changes according to their recommendations, and then went back for a review and further changes as necessary. The women reported that this model went a long way to allowing them to feel heard, validated, and understood. I was thrilled! We had cracked the code together! 
The 'SSCM' is currently being trialed in a western Sydney special needs school, with amazingly positive results so far!

If you haven't already gathered, I am a very small fish, living in Mittagong, NSW with my family, and my rescue animals. I have written my model purely out of love for my clients, and the need to change the world to be more equal. I do not have any corporate funding, and I work for myself. I cannot throw the huge amounts of money at this idea, like the corporates do, so this is why I am asking for your help. I will not be making money from this community version model. It is written to teach community empowerment, to reduce stigma and loneliness, and to save lives. I will never stop until there is equality in my lifetime.
