Healing Qualia Substack

Healing Qualia: The Substack on Child Psychological Abuse, Parental Alienation and Adult Survivor Healing.

Research, clinical insight and survivor-informed conversations about what happens when children affected by parental alienation and psychological abuse grow into adulthood.

Child Psychological Abuse, Parental Alienation and What Happens When the Children Grow Up

Healing Qualia is a Substack devoted to understanding child psychological abuse related to parental alienation, familial abduction, estrangement and destructive family-system dynamics, with a particular focus on what happens when the children affected by these experiences grow into adults.

For decades, much of the discussion surrounding parental alienation has understandably centred on children, separating parents, family courts and disputes about contact. Yet childhood is not where the story ends. The children grow up, and many eventually enter adulthood carrying grief, anxiety, attachment injuries, identity disruption, family estrangement, loyalty conflicts, relationship difficulties and childhood histories that may still feel confusing or incomplete. Some arrive in therapy without ever having connected their present difficulties with what occurred within their family many years earlier.

Healing Qualia was created to bring those adult survivors more fully into the conversation.

The Substack was founded by Australian Clinical Psychotherapist, researcher and author Dr Alyse Price-Tobler, PhD, MCAP, and grew from the research and clinical work behind the Healing Qualia Treatment Protocol © (HQTP). At its centre is a question that has guided much of this work: How do we help the adults these children eventually become?

Healing Qualia brings together clinical knowledge, research, lived experience and the voices of adult survivors. It is written for mental health practitioners and allied professionals, but also for researchers, family and domestic violence professionals, lawyers, teachers, adult survivors, targeted parents and others seeking to better understand the lifelong consequences of child psychological abuse and disrupted parent-child relationships.

What Healing Qualia Explores

The Substack creates space for subjects that are often too complex for short social-media discussions and too important to be reduced to arguments about whether parental alienation exists. Articles explore child psychological abuse related to parental alienation, familial abduction, coercive control, family and domestic violence, spousal abuse, attachment injury, developmental trauma, grief, estrangement, identity disruption, competing family narratives, adult relationships and the long process of making sense of childhood experiences.

A central focus is the experience of the adult survivor. What happens when someone begins questioning a family narrative they accepted as a child? How does a person grieve a parent who may still be alive? What happens when childhood loyalty conflicts continue into adulthood, marriage, parenting and relationships with siblings or extended family? How should clinicians respond when an adult survivor begins uncovering information about their past that changes their understanding of themselves and their family?

Healing Qualia also examines treatment itself. It discusses clinical assessment, differential formulation, therapeutic mistakes, recovery, reunification, boundaries, decisions about future contact, suicide risk and the importance of protecting survivor autonomy throughout treatment. It also introduces the principles and six-phase structure of the Healing Qualia Treatment Protocol and explores the research and clinical questions that led to its development.

One of the earliest themes of Healing Qualia is captured in a simple observation: the children grew up, and now we need to understand what happened next. Much has been written about identifying parental alienation during childhood, but considerably less attention has been given to the clinicians who later sit across from those same children when they are 25, 40 or 60 years old and trying to understand what happened within their family and what it has meant for the rest of their lives.

Assessment Before Assumption

Healing Qualia does not begin from the position that every difficult divorce, estrangement or rejected parent-child relationship constitutes parental alienation. Children may reject or fear parents for legitimate reasons, including abuse, neglect, violence or other serious relational harm. Equally, children can be psychologically influenced, frightened, manipulated, triangulated or drawn into loyalty conflicts that profoundly alter their relationship with a previously safe and loving parent.

The task of good clinical practice is to understand the difference.

For this reason, one of the central principles running throughout Healing Qualia is assessment before assumption. The purpose is not to choose a parent, impose a predetermined narrative or force reunification. It is to understand the person, the family system in which they developed, what they experienced, how they came to understand those experiences and what they may now need in order to recover.

Why Healing Qualia?

The word qualia refers to the subjective quality of human experience — what something actually feels like from inside the person living it. This idea is particularly important when working with child psychological abuse and parental alienation because external descriptions can only tell us part of the story.

A court document may record that contact stopped. A parent may describe the years that were lost. A clinician may recognise symptoms of trauma or attachment disruption. None of these things alone can fully explain what it felt like to be the child living within that family system, attempting to understand competing realities, maintain important attachments and remain emotionally safe.

Healing Qualia seeks to bring that inner experience back into view.

It asks not only what happened, but also what the experience came to mean to the person who lived through it, how it shaped their developing identity and relationships, what was lost along the way and what might now help them heal.

Healing Qualia is therefore more than a Substack about parental alienation. It is an evolving conversation between clinical practice, research and lived experience about child psychological abuse and its consequences across the lifespan.

If you are a clinician, researcher, allied professional, adult survivor, targeted parent or someone seeking to better understand these complex family experiences, you are warmly invited to join the conversation.

The children grew up. Their stories did not end at eighteen.
