Specialist Support in Times of Acute Stress and Trauma

Crises can occur suddenly and affect anyone, regardless of age, ability, or background. Effective intervention during a crisis can take many forms, from informal family support to professional counselling strategies aimed at helping individuals cope with acute stress in ways that reduce the negative psychological, physiological, and behavioural impacts on themselves and their broader environment.

Crisis counselling is a short-term, focused intervention that provides immediate emotional support, practical resources, and psychological stabilisation. It is not a substitute for long-term psychotherapy, but rather a specialised service designed to help individuals and communities regain a sense of control, safety, and direction following a critical event. Unresolved or chronic exposure to stress or trauma may lead to serious mental health concerns, making early, skilled intervention essential.

Dr Alyse brings over 38 years of experience as a clinical psychotherapist and has provided crisis counselling across a broad range of high-intensity environments. In addition to her therapeutic expertise, she has served as a frontline volunteer officer with the NSW State Emergency Service (SES) for over 20 years.

Dr Alyse holds multiple nationally recognised State Rescue Board qualifications, including:

  • Road Crash Rescue

  • Vertical Rescue (Heights and Depths)

  • Land Search and Rescue

  • Disaster First Aid

  • Emergency Operations Centre Management

She has also served as the on-call Head Debriefing Crisis Counsellor for both the NSW SES and the Fire Brigade during times of disaster, providing immediate psychological support to first responders, victims, and communities impacted by natural disasters, large-scale emergencies, and critical incidents.

Crisis Counselling Services Include:

  • Immediate psychological support following traumatic events (e.g., accidents, assaults, disasters, sudden loss)

  • Critical incident debriefing for individuals, teams, and first responders

  • Emotional containment and stabilisation

  • Triage and referral to longer-term therapeutic or support services

  • Collaboration with emergency services, mental health teams, and community organisations

  • Specialist support for clients with co-occurring disability and mental illness during acute events
